The
CONTRACE (Convective
Transport of Trace Gases into the Upper Troposphere
over Europe: Budget and Impact on Chemistry)
project is an atmospheric research program funded
by the German "Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung" (BMBF) through the
Atmospheric Research Program 2000 (AFO2000) and coordinated by the
DLR. The objective of CONTRACE is to
study and quantify the importance of
convective transport of trace gases in the UT above Europe, and in particular
- to investigate the relative importance of convective clouds, frontal
systems and long-range advection in transporting nitrogen oxides (NOX=NO+NO2),
HOX precursors, and other chemical species into the UT over Europe
including variation with season;
- to quantify the total convective transport of NOX and other
ozone precursors over Europe;
- to compare the contribution from convection to the trace gas budget of the
UT with the contributions by aircraft emissions and lightning;
- to investigate the impact of convectively uplifted trace chemicals on the
photochemical balance of the UT.
In support of
CONTRACE,
tropospheric excess columns of NO2 as derived from measurements of the Global
Ozone Monitoring Experiment (GOME)
and the SCIAMACHY instrument on
Envisat are made available on this site. The tropospheric excess column is defined as the integrated tropospheric
NO2 amount that is in excess of that measured above a clean air reference
sector, usually the Pacific. All
GOME plots shown on this page are derived from GOME Near Real
Time measurements (courtesy of ESA/ESRIN/DLR).
Please note,
that no cloud clearance has been applied to the data. Therefore, regions covered
with clouds can be misinterpreted as regions with low tropospheric NO2
abundances!

The plots below are produced automatically and are based on GOME Near
Real Time spectra and SCIAMACHY raw data. Usually, plots should be available with a delay of one day, but
as there is no extra funding for this web page, maintenance does not have a high
priority. If you experience any problems, please contact Andreas
Richter.
As result of a problem with the low
rate tape recorder on ERS-2, no global GOME data is available since June 23rd, 2003.
More data is available in our group off-line. If you have any requests, please
