| MAX-DOAS measurements in SummitIntroduction Instrument Data References Links Contact Introduction:A MAXDOAS instrument has been operated at the Summit research station (72° N, 38° W) in the interior of Greenland from July 2003 to September 2005. This station is located at a very special high altitude (3200 m) Arctic site characterized by low temperatures, very low water vapour column and a clean troposphere. The focus of the measurements is stratospheric chemistry, although some interesting tropospheric chemistry is also taking place on and within the snow. With its year round snow and ice cover, Greenland is also a very interesting site for satellite validation and the study of albedo effects on the data retrieval. Instrument:The DOAS instrument in Summit was located inside a measurement container shared with the RAMAS microwave instrument which is also operated by the IUP Bremen. It consists of a temperature stabilized grating spectrometer equipped with a cooled CCD detector and spectrometer shutter. The instrument is connected to a heated telescope which is located on top of the container with a quartz fibre bundle and a number of electrical and control connections. The telescope has two viewing ports: One in zenith direction, the other one towards the horizon (off-axis). In the off-axis direction, up to 4 angles can be observed sequentially in the range of 0° to 30° elevation by means of a motorized mirror. Both line-lamp and white light calibration lamps are integrated in the telescope box and are used for daily calibration measurements. More on the instrument and measurement principle can be found on our MAXDOAS page. Data:If you have any requests, please contact Thomas Medeke. References:
