GOME tropospheric BrO data
GOME tropospheric BrO V1.0
For the European project
THALOZ, a
complete time series of GOME tropospheric BrO columns has been created which can be downloaded as gridded
monthly averages.

GOME tropospheric BrO columns Version 1:
This data set uses several approximation for the tropospheric BrO
columns:
- for correction of the stratospheric contribution, stratospheric BrO
columns derived from a dedicated SLIMCAT run at the time of GOME overpass are
subtracted
- no cloud treatment is implemented yet
- a stratospheric airmass factor is used which gives appropriate values over
bright surfaces but leads to an underestimation of BrO over dark surfaces such
as open ocean
- the tropospheric BrO column has been normalized to be close to 0 over the
equatorial Pacific. The normalisation is needed to account for artefacts
introduced by the GOME diffuser plate
- there is a known interference from HCHO. Areas with large atmospheric HCHO
columns yield too low BrO columns
- the presence of a tropospheric background of about 1 ppt leads to
apparently enhanced columns over bright clouds
- only forward scan measurements at solar zenith
angle < 80° are included to optimise spatial resolution and sensitivity to the
troposphere
For a description of the method used to derive BrO columns, please see the
references below.
